So you’ve got your goals, and you’re doing your best to maintain this healthy lifestyle you’ve been working towards. If you’re anything like us, you may find this difficult when simplicity and convenience call in the form of take out, especially during lunch at the office. There just seems to be so many options and all so convenient and close to work, all while being extremely tasty.
However, once you take a look at your bank account and realized just how much you spend on lunch each week your jaw will hit the floor. Not to mention, with all of the delicious options that are available for takeout it can be really difficult to make healthy choices.
Now, admittedly with the cooler weather coming it's easy to become a little lazy. If there is anything that can make packing a lunch and preparing meals quick and easier, we are all for it! Here are a few quick and healthy tips for brown bagging it.
Prepare: If on Sunday evenings, you make a plan for your lunches for the week, you can head to the grocery store and pick up whatever you may need. Having an idea of what you can make or would like to eat ensures that you have all necessary ingredients, and makes the actual preparation of getting your lunch together that much easier and faster all while making sure you’re sticking to your healthy eating plan.
Get Creative: Right now in my fridge we have some left over chicken, two peppers, lettuce and left over sushi from the weekend. It doesn’t seem like much, but you can actually make an awesome lunch bowl. Whip up some rice or quinoa, add some salsa and you have yourself a delicious burrito bowl. As long as you have veggies, a grain, and some type of protein you’ve got all the makings of a nutritious lunch that’s easy to pack and can be microwaved at work. Coming up with interesting concoctions from whatever you have in your fridge can be a fun and creative way to pack your lunch for work.
Go with a Smoothie: Toss a few of your favourite fruits (frozen or fresh - whatever you have), protein powder or Greek yogurt, milk and ice in a blender and there you go, you have yourself a lunch that will keep you full until dinner. Smoothies are a great way to get nutrients in a quick and easy way, the whole process takes about two minutes and it’s totally transportable making it easy to bring with you wherever you’re headed. Make your Freezer your new Best Friend: when making dinner at night, start making extras of everything, now I know you may not feel like eating last night’s left overs right away (déjà vu of “I just ate this” can be a push to run down the street and grab that street meat) but if you toss it in the freezer in a reusable container, you can eat it later on in the week. Just grab it from the freezer, toss it in your lunch bag and get going. You can freeze just about anything and it will keep, full meals, sandwiches, smoothies, etc. all are great things to put in the freezer and let thaw for another day’s lunch.
